The Fabulosa Asinus: Pegasus D'allas, Guardian of the big d

Mythological Origin - The Spirit of North Texas

The Celestial Origin

Long, long ago, when the Trinity River was but a muddy trickle, before fast-lanes and high-rises, before deck-parks and skyscrapers were anything more than a dream in the Earth, the heavens were watched over by a creature of humble origins: a donkey named D'allas (pronounced dee-ah-liss). D'allas was no ordinary beast. He was a creature of immense patience and fortitude, yet within his soul burned a quiet, fervent yearning for the boundless blue above. One night, while resting on the highest point of the Texas plain, he gazed up at the stars. A celestial wind, known now as the North Texas Norther, swept down. It wasn't a cruel wind, but one of ambition and possibility. This wind, sent by the stars themselves, saw the donkey's unwavering spirit and decided to gift him a body worthy of his heart. As it whistled around him, two magnificent, sturdy wings—not feathered, but woven from the very same iridescent, strong material as a Texas Blackland Prairie spider's silk and the sun-baked gold of a cotton harvest—sprouted from his back.

The First Flight and the Trinity's Blessing

D'allas, now Pegasus D'allas, stretched his new wings and took flight. His first, joyous cry echoed across the empty plains, a sound more akin to a determined yee-haw than a bray. He soared so high that when he flew over what would become downtown Dallas, the celestial gold dust from his wings rained down. It is said that where this glittering dust settled, the spirit of ambition, opportunity, and the courage to build big took root. He flew in a distinctive, graceful, yet slightly goofy figure-eight pattern, which is why the city's unofficial symbol is often seen in a subtle, sweeping loop—a nod to his flight path. As he landed on the banks of a small, meandering creek, his mighty hoof struck the ground. From that spot, a spring of clear, flowing water erupted, eventually swelling to become the Trinity River itself. This is why the river, though often slow, is the true lifeblood of the city: it carries the blessing of D'allas, a reminder that even the most stubborn and underestimated source can become a powerful force for good and growth.

The Modern Incarnation and the Spirit of Dallas

Pegasus D'allas does not live in the sky anymore. As the city grew, he realized his true task was not to watch from above, but to inspire from below. In a final act of devotion, he transformed himself into the city's indomitable spirit. His golden, winged form is occasionally glimpsed in the modern city’s highest places, not as a full creature, but as a subtle, powerful energy:

~ The Red Horse of Determination: The famous Flying Red Horse (the city's long-

time unofficial emblem) is not a true horse at all, but a tribute to D'allas. It serves as

a permanent, fiery promise that even a simple beast can take flight and a reminder

that the city's greatness is built on tireless, gritty effort.

~ The Enduring Bray: When a Dallasite is facing a tough challenge—a long workday,

a massive project, a great personal fear—and finds the strength to push through,

that sudden spark of unyielding grit is known as "The Bray of D'allas."

It's the moment the soul says, "I might look silly, but I will not be stopped."

The Inspiring Moral

The myth of Pegasus D'allas is the ultimate inspiration for Dallas, Texas: • You don't have to be a thoroughbred to succeed. You can be a simple, hardworking donkey. • True worth comes not from your bloodline, but from your ambition. Pegasus D'allas proves that with enough heart, you can earn the wings to fly higher than anyone expects. • The power of the city lies in its unique, stubborn spirit: the ability to build, to dream, and to rise to the sky on wings woven from persistence and prairie gold.
